Pulborough, West Sussex
Thatched houses have a character all their own, and this was our first time dealing with a thatch which we found to be a wonderful material in terms of creative flexibility.
The home’s owners bought the house as a typical ‘Wells’ Cottage with a long thin lounge, tiny bedrooms and a desperate need for improvement. Apart from a small extension to the rear it was virtually unaltered, since its construction over 80 years previously.
We were called in to help design sympathetic extensions to the front, side and rear with the aim of producing a contemporary living space that still echoed the thatched cottage vernacular.
We advised on exterior design, construction, materials and interior design, including kitchen and bathroom layouts.
As well as helping them identify where to source appropriate materials, including recycled bricks and beams, we also helped track down solid oak flooring for just £36.00 per square metre.
The final outcome is stunning and the house was featured in Country Life. Sadly the owners’ job relocation meant they had to move on two years later, but the house went under offer at full price in just ten days in the depth of the recession.
Apart from giving them a wonderful and happy family home, it also yielded a substantial profit.
